Perhaps least surprisingly of all is that CPAC will be inviting Donald Trump to speak. I suppose they’re not tired of losing. Now it is hard to describe the irony of the following saga, though I will try. CPAC’s theme for this year is “America Uncancelled”, in the tradition of conservatives always feigning victimhood while decrying the left for doing exactly that. But CPAC decided to disinvite a pro-Trump speaker for, well, some interesting reasons.
Conservative Political Action Conference organizers have canceled the rapper Young Pharaoh’s appearance after learning he held anti-Semitic views. The CPAC Twitter account said an unnamed speaker ‘will not be participating in our conference’ after organizers ‘learned’ they expressed ‘reprehensible views’. This year’s CPAC theme is ‘America Uncancelled’ and kicks off from Florida on Friday morning. Young Pharaoh was due to appear in the time slot an hour before former President Donald Trump gives what is being called his comeback address. The left-leaning Media Matters for America found a number of anti-Semitic comments on Young Pharaoh’s public social media postings. He wrote ‘all the censorship & pedophilia on social media is being done by Israeli Jews’ and also called Judaism a ‘complete lie’ that’s ‘made up for political gain’. Young Pharaoh reacted to the CPAC cancellation by tweeting it was ‘#CENSORSHIP’ and ‘#RACISM’ and a ‘#DICTATORSHIP’.
Putting aside for a second the empirically correct claim that jews are overwhelming represented in getting people cancelled and the promotion of pedophilia, if not actual pedophilic acts themselves, let’s keep our eye on the problem. CPAC is a private event that has the right to invite or disinvite who they want; it is not a free speech platform, and they don’t owe any speaker or audience member anything. But that is not the issue, the issue is rather one of logical consistency. CPAC specifically and conservatives more broadly have been yammering on for the entirety of Trump’s presidency and thereafter about the problematic nature of “cancel culture”. This “culture” is to their mind the left not allowing other voices to be heard in the public square, and attempting to get them shut down. CPAC’s theme is that America is now Uncancelled, and yet they cancel one of their own speakers because they disagree with his views, which were not even part of the event.
It is not like Young Pharaoh was going to talk about the problem of jews. Those were social media posts from a long time ago. But just like the left, when conservatives found ‘reprehensible views’ in the past of one of their own, they disown them. I’ve never been to CPAC and I don’t care. My point is that when conservatives say “people the left disagrees with, the left cancels” they are not taking a principled stand for all speech. They are simply irritated that they, conservatives, are the ones being cancelled by the left. But as soon as someone who isn’t conservative is cancelled, they will not defend that person, and in fact, will throw them under the bus. In conclusion, the right does not support free speech for dissident views anymore than the left does, because both conservatives and leftists have a duopolistic stranglehold on acceptable speech. And since they both control power institutions, they have no interest in defending on principle those who would undermine them with truly dissident thought.
PS: Pharaoh responded:
THIS IS #CENSORSHIP AT ITS BEST! ALL BECAUSE I SAID “I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE VALIDITY OF #JUDAISM AND AM WILLING TO PLACE $50,000 ON MY SELF TO DEBATE THE TOP #JEWISH RABBI”’ NOW IM NO LONGER INVITED TO @CPAC_TV#RACIST , #DICTATORSHIP , #YOUNGPHARAOH
